The denim skirt

Do you have a denim skirt? If you don’t, you should.main.original.585x0-2

It isn’t always in fashion and it might lay in the bottom of the cupboard waiting…. but, sooner or later, will come back out!

The reason, of course, is that IT IS a really good “problem solver”!! Not as much as a pair of jeans, nevertheless, very good. I find it especially useful in the transitional seasons, when you are not sure whether you should wear a winter or a summer skirt. Denim is “seasonless”. Of course if the denim is light in colour or weight, it does need to be worn only in the summer. Not true the opposite, I think heavier or darker denim looks nice even when it’s hot and sunny! Providing you are actually able to wear it without melting….main.original.585x0-3

It looks nice with or without tights, with a woollen jumper or with a cotton top. It looks nice with heels and with flats.main.original.585x0-4

Denim is a great fabric, its thickness and toughness, helps to “hold in” bulks….

Don’t think only classic denim skirt, although it is always great, but lots of different styles:

There’s the pencil skirt:

Also buttoned up at the front:

There’s the vintage skirt:

I do need to put some classic skirts:

There’s also looser styles:

I have chosen against showing short, or shorter for that matter, styles. I don’t like them.

So, they are nice with just about anything. Yes. Well, I don’t really like denim with black. I used to, but it has been overdone, so I don’t like it anymore. Colours are going to make denim casual.

Denim skirt red + navy boots

Denim skirt + tweed jacket

Depending on what you wear with it, you will make it more or less casual. I reckon it can be reasonably elegant too though. The shoes make quite a difference as well.

Jackets can be nice with this kind of skirt but, if you are going to wear a classic blazer, go extravagant with the shoes or jewellery at least.

Navy is always nice… if a bit classic.

I like tweed too…a little more casual but again, it depends on the accessories.

What about a trench coat or a fabric biker?

Of course you don’t have to wear a jacket, you could just wear a shirt to make the outfit a little elegant.

Or more casual.

A sweater will definitely make it quite casual, love these fair isle ones…

Don’t forget to wear a belt if there are loops on the skirt.

Or even if there aren’t.

Shoes. Anything goes. Flats, brogues, heels, ankle boots. I don’t like under the knee boots, they look, I reckon, “common” with the denim skirt.

I do like black for the shoes only.

Matching top and skirt/trousers

Terribly excited about this!!!!
It’s one of those things which feel new, not really never seen before, difficult in fashion I suppose, but kind of not been seen in the last few years. When was it, the 60’s perhaps, when women used to wear matching top and skirt ? I mean the ones that didn’t wear minis…. Difficult to believe but, some actually were kind of prudish.. It doesn’t matter really, what does is, we can finally find something quite different.

COS sleeveless wool top and wool skirt

COS sleeveless wool top and wool skirt

I know, it doesn’t look very sexy. I don’t like “sexy”, at least not what is normally intended as such. You must love well cut clothes and good fabrics, which, for this kind of look, tend to be both always very good, and which I am rather biased towards. Tartan,

Oasis claret check top and trousers

tweed and so on. Now, I agree you don’t want to look too “good girl”, so, don’t wear it with flat shoes! I can’t believe I am saying this but, I think this kind of look should be worn with heels!!
Of course with the trousers is another matter…you could add lace-up shoes, although heels are probably nicer in this case.

Anyway, if the skirt or trousers are a good cut and follow your body shape properly, you wear heels or boots, perhaps an intriguing make-up and have a feminine haircut….I reckon you will look sexy in a much more subtle way.

Another way to spice up this kind of outfit is adding a necklace:

Here are some gorgeous heels for it:

Some suede ankle boots:

Some leather ankle boots:

And some casual boots for women like me who can’t walk with heels or for the more sporty ones…

Perhaps I should have done a post about boots, I got a bit carried away…

Shirt and trousers ensemble

I don’t usually like shirts buttoned up to the top. A lot depends on the hair style I suppose, and also on what you wear the shirt with.

Anyway, I like this:

main.original.0x1000c

The reasons I like this outfit are:

It looks cool and chic.

The pattern is in the bottom half and is small. The shape of the trousers isn’t too classic or too unusual either. It is possible to wear a skirt instead, a pencil skirt I would say, which covers the knees.

The belt complements the trousers well, I think the fact that it is quite “rich” in details makes the trousers look even more chic!

The shirt is very simple and one colour. I don’t think it would work otherwise.

The shoes go very well and, as I prefer flats, I am obviously going to love them! Having said that, I think heels would be nice too…

Now, the model is tall and thin and young and has straight gorgeous hair. I am not sure “mere mortals” like us could manage that. Perhaps, we should have our hair up, or short,in order to look good with a shirt buttoned up like that.

Last, the clutch. That makes this look quite glamorous, if you wore any other kind of bag, it just wouldn’t be so cool.

So, here are some possible clothes to obtain the same look:
